REST
The puppy will need a lot of rest. He’s just like a new baby. Let him sleep as much as possible. If he’s sleeping, don’t wake him up. If he’s playing and seems to be getting tired, put him in his crate for a nap. If you have children, please make sure they understand that the puppy needs his rest and should not be disturbed when he’s sleeping.
FEEDING AND TREATS
We feed TLC Whole Life Pet Food. It is a premium quality food that is not sold in stores. You must order it online at the link below. For treats, we recommend small pieces of cooked chicken, freeze-dried liver, or TLC biscuits. Avoid raw hides and anything with artificial dyes or preservatives.
MONITORING
Watch for signs of listlessness, diarrhea, and vomiting. If any of these occur together, your puppy may be dehydrated. If symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, contact your veterinarian. Hypoglycemia (sugar drop) can also occur. If your puppy appears weak or can't stand, immediately rub Nutri-cal or Karo syrup on their gums; they should respond within 5–10 minutes. If not, seek emergency veterinary care at once. Keep your puppy away from public areas (dog parks, pet stores, rest areas) until they are fully vaccinated to prevent exposure to diseases like Parvo.
Medical Care & Protection
SHOTS, WORMER, TICKS AND FLEA CONTROL
Your puppy will come with his or her first set of shots and a deworming series. You will receive a health record detailing these treatments. It is critical to schedule a follow-up visit with your veterinarian within the first week to establish a continuing vaccination schedule. For parasite control, we recommend starting a monthly heartworm, tick, and flea preventative as advised by your vet. Prevention is much easier and safer than treatment. Keep your puppy away from public areas like dog parks or pet stores until they have completed their full series of vaccinations at approximately 16 weeks of age.
BATHING YOUR PUPPY
Brush the puppy first to remove loose hair. Bathe them with a gentle oatmeal-based puppy shampoo in warm (not hot) water. Rinse thoroughly to prevent skin irritation. Avoid getting soap in their ears or eyes. Dry them well with a towel or a blow dryer on a cool setting. Bathing should only be done when necessary to avoid stripping natural oils from their skin.
HAIR CARE
The Golden Retriever's coat requires regular maintenance. Brush your puppy several times a week to prevent mats and tangles, especially behind the ears and under the legs. Use a slicker brush and a metal comb. Keeping up with grooming now will help them get used to the process as they grow into adults with full coats.
HAIR CARE
The Golden Retriever is a double coated breed. You should brush your puppy at least once a week. This will help remove any loose hair and keep their coat looking healthy. During shedding season, you may need to brush them more frequently. Pay special attention to the feathers on their legs and tail, as these areas are prone to matting. Never shave a Golden Retriever as their double coat protects them from both heat and cold.
BATHING YOUR PUPPY
Try not to bathe your puppy too often! Bathing them can strip the natural oils from their skin and coat. We recommend bathing your puppy once a month or as needed. Between baths, we suggest using dog wipes and a dry shampoo to help keep your puppy clean and smelling fresh.
VITAMINS
We HIGHLY recommend NuVet Plus immune system builder for your puppy. It is a pharmaceutical-grade vitamin supplement that helps strengthen the immune system and support long-term health. Because it is not sold in stores, it must be ordered directly.
